COVID-19/Coronavirus Update

Girls on the Run of Greater Detroit and the YMCA continues to closely monitor the global COVID-19/Coronavirus outbreak and its impact on our community. We will work closely with our contacts at local school districts and community partners to implement recommendations or guidelines from the district and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We are committed to maintaining safe and sanitary conditions at our Program Sites.

Illnesses such as colds, flu, H1N1, Coronavirus, etc. receive heavy media attention and can create anxiety among staff, members, parents and volunteers. To combat any confusion, we are reminding all of best practices to prevent the spread of any virus –

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Build hand washing into practices: at the beginning of practice and/or before activities that involve a lot of touching, when returning from the workout.

  • Before practices, wipe down surfaces that you’ll use during the lesson with hot soapy water or Clorox wipes.

  • Stay home when you are sick or have been exposed to sickness.

  • Cover your mouth or nose with a tissue or at the fold your elbow. Place the tissue in the trash…wash hands.

Please refer to the CDC Coronavirus Fact Sheet. For more information, visit the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website – www.cdc.gov.

You may have questions regarding plans for the Girls on the Run program and end-of-season celebratory 5K events if schools are forced to close for extended periods of time should the Coronavirus impact our area. We will follow the decisions outlined by our local school districts and community partners regarding cancellations and closures and will be sure to communicate such decisions in a timely manner via email, on our Facebook page, and on our website.

This represents our best and current thinking on the matter as of today, March 20, 2020. We will continue to monitor all developments in real-time and communicate any updates via email. Questions? Email gotr@ymcadetroit.org.

** If your school district takes further action regarding after school programming please contact Kelly Plocharczyk, Girls on the Run | STRIDE Director, immediately. **
