We are thrilled to announce that our Spring 2012 Girls on the Run 5k event will be hosted at Oakland University at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2012!

At this moving and unique event, all of our Girls on the Run participants and families come together to run, skip, walk, and dance their way to the finish line of a 5k event that celebrates the girls’ accomplishments.  We strongly encourage family and friends to run with their girl and celebrate with her as she crosses the finish line.

Registration for the 5k is now available online through Active.com and will be available in person at your local YMCA.

This year’s “How Does Girls on the Run Make You FEARLESS?” Secret Essay contest is now open! Participants from the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 seasons are eligible to apply. 
Secret will award $500 to ten girls and $3,500 to the corresponding ten Councils where the winning girls participate. Winners will be selected from two grade categories: 3rd – 5th grade (6 winners) and 6th – 8th grade (4 winners).

All entries must be signed by a parent or legal guardian or they will not be accepted! If your girls write essays on blank paper, please make certain the girl lists all of the information required on the official entry form (name, council, grade etc.) and that these are signed and dated by their legal guardian.

Key Details:

• Entries must be postmarked by April 30, 2012, on an Official Entry Form or plain piece of 8-1/2″ x 11″ paper.
• All entries must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
• Essays must be 300 words or fewer and handwritten. Typed entries will not be judged unless a documented disability exists which prohibits writing by hand.

Essays will be judged on the following criteria:

• Originality & Creativity (40%)
• Inspirational Value of Essay (25%)
• Appropriateness of Essay to Theme (35%)
